How To Use Olive Oil To Detangle Matted Hair

There are 2 methods you can try to detangle matted hair. I’m going to start first with the technique I’ve used. Then, I will share another recommended way I have yet to use personally.

1st Method

  1. Make sure your hair is freshly washed or cleaned first.
  2.  Divide your hair into sections depending on the thickness of your hair.
  3.  Dampen your hair or spray one section at a time with water.
  4.  Take one section of hair and apply a small amount of olive oil (I eyeball it).
  5.  WAIT for at least one minute for the olive oil to set in and soften your hair.
  6.  Gently comb through your hair.
  7.  Repeat steps 3 to 6 with each section of hair.

For easier application, you may want to add oil to a squirt bottle or oil and water to a spray bottle. I’ve used this method on my daughter, and it caused me to fall in love with olive oil all over again.

2nd Method

Massage a small amount onto your scalp and generously to matted hair. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition it as usual. If necessary, proceed to detangle your hair in small sections with a fine tooth comb.

Be Patient And Take Your Time

If you have matted hair, it will take some time to detangle it. Be patient and take your time. You may need to use a wide-toothed comb to avoid breaking your hair. Or, you might need to use a fine tooth comb to gently work through a few strands of hair at a time.

This is almost as difficult as trying to detangle your hair–taking the time to detangle it. And, it can take a long time, depending on how matted it is. But, if it’s possible and worth it, then it might be an option you want to consider.

Your Matted Hair May Need To Be Cut

If your hair is severely matted, it may need to be cut. This will help to prevent further damage to the hair and scalp. If you decide to cut your matted hair, use sharp scissors and take your time. Start by slowly working through small sections of the matted hair.

To use olive oil for matted hair, massage a small amount into your scalp and hair before cutting. This will help to lubricate the scissors and prevent further damage to the hair. After you have cut away the matted hair, shampoo and condition it as usual.

Get Advice From A Hair Professional

If you feel that your hair is too unmanageable but unsure what to do, you may need to talk to a hair expert. Be patient when detangling matted hair, and seek professional help if the hair is severely matted. A hair professional may give you the best advice on handling matted hair. They will be able to assess the severity of the situation and give you the best course of action.

Hopefully, you’ve found these tips helpful. If you applied any of these methods and succeeded, please share in the comments below or share this post with someone who may need it.
